Adventurous Engagement Session Ideas

Whether you are proposing or planning your engagement photo session, we have some out-of-the-box adventurous engagement session ideas for the bold and fearless Vermont couples today!

My favorite thing about all of these sessions is the authenticity in each of these photos. Each couple is doing what they enjoy together in their photos – and their genuine excitement shines through! Scroll below and get inspired.

Skiing and Snowboarding Engagement Photos

If you love to ski or snowboard, this is such a fun way to show off your love of the slopes. (Side note: I’m amazed how many Vermont wedding photographers can ski or snowboard while taking amazing photos!) The photos are always epic!

Adventurous Engagement Session: Hiking

Hiking is a no-brainer way to add some adventure to your engagement session. There is no shortage of places to explore in the Green Mountain State! If you can find a hike with a waterfall or swimming hole to cool off in – even better.

Plan on going early in the morning or around sunset to capture some amazing lighting!

Hot Air Balloon Ride Proposal

Talk about taking your love to new heights! This would be an amazing bucket list date for your engagement shoot or, in the case of this couple, an EPIC surprise proposal!

Urban Adventure

Exploring a new place is always an adventure, and Vermont has plenty of charming towns to discover.

In Burlington, we’d head to Church Street Marketplace and Waterfront Park. Or, head to your favorite ski town (maybe after hitting the slopes!) for an adventure.

Adventurous Engagement Session at the Carnival

If there is a local carnival or fair in town around the time of your engagement photos, why not take advantage? I think this would be such a fun idea! Hop on the Ferris wheel, ride the swings, and play some games together!

Explore A Lake

Vermont has lots of lakes, and the water always is a great backdrop to use for your engagement photos. Depending on your mood, you could simply just walk on the beach and dip your toes in the water. (Splashing each other optional, but encouraged!) Or you can go all out and go swimming or ride in a canoe together!

Fly Fishing Adventurous Engagement Session

To be honest, I never would have thought a fly fishing engagement could be so romantic and sweet, but THIS IS SO CUTE. This couple’s love for each other and the outdoors shines through their gallery and I can’t get enough.

Just goes to show you that anything you love to do with your partner could be an amazing photoshoot. Be sure to talk to your photographer about your plans so they can prepare for how to best capture you in your element.

Indoor Engagement Session Ideas

Have you considered an indoor engagement session? These are amazing and often overlooked! As the weather turns colder in Vermont, this is especially a great idea to consider for your winter engagement photos.

Two of the biggest benefits of indoor engagement photos are that they are unique and not weather dependent.

While I love a Vermont scenic engagement shoot, your personality can really shine with your indoor location choice! Plus, an indoor shoot gives you more options for when you schedule your photos because you don’t have to worry about the weather.

Convinced? Here are some of my favorite indoor engagement ideas from Vermont photographers.

A Brewery, Wine Shop, Bar, or Coffee Shop

Head to your favorite brewery and cheers to saying “I do” over a brew or two! (Also, holding your mug is a great way to show off that new ring!) Plus, the industrial vibe is a great backdrop for your photos. Beer isn’t your thing? What about a wine bar or coffee shop?

Think about places that are meaningful to both of you as a couple. Years from now you can look back on these photos and remember all the times you spent there together!

Greenhouse for an Indoor Engagement Session

This is one of my favorite ideas! If you were dreaming of an outdoor shoot but the it didn’t work out, a greenhouse can give you that feeling without worrying about the weather. As a bonus, I’d pick out a new plant to bring home and grow to remember your shoot!

Indoor Engagement Session at the Arcade

If posed engagement photos aren’t your thing – head to the arcade! You can your partner can play around and just hang out together while getting some awesome photos. This is a great indoor engagement session idea for the any time of year.

Library or Bookshop

There’s something extra cozy and romantic about this idea! If you are both bookworms this is the perfect way to spend an afternoon while taking some unique photos. Stroll through an adorable downtown and roam in and out of bookshops and libraries.

Record Store for Your Indoor Engagement Session

Love music? Visit a record shop together – maybe you’ll find inspiration for your first dance song!

Your Home

I think couples often overlook their own space for their photos! Taking indoor engagement session photos in your own space has a lot of advantages.

First, you’ll be comfortable, and have access to your stuff to do activities you love like play guitar, make food in your kitchen, or mix up a drink. It’s also good way to include your pets (and then have put in another room if needed, without the help of another person).

Also, I think it’s really special to have part of your actual, daily life captured by a professional.

A Hotel Lounge or AirBnB

Make your engagement session a weekend away! Hotel lobbies and lounges can be stunning, and make for a great backdrop. You can also book a beautiful Airbnb for the weekend. This will be a fun weekend away and you get to make use of a beautiful interior.

Plan Ahead

If you want to take your pictures at a local business, it’s a good idea to call ahead and ask the manager if it’s okay beforehand. I’d say something like: My partner and I love [business name] so much, we’d love to take our engagement pictures on site! Is that something you allow? When would be a good time for you?

Going at a slower time will be less stressful for everyone; you can take your time taking photos without worrying about inconveniencing the business or random other patrons jumping into your shot. Depending on the location and their availability, they may even be able to open to you before/after hours so you can have the place to yourself!

And be sure to leave a tip to show your appreciation!

Meet Wedding Photographer Jenna Brisson

Jenna Brisson is one of those wedding vendors who you just know you’ll stay friends with after the big event. She’s bubbly, authentic, and a wicked talented wedding and elopement photographer. I joke with her that she’s the current reigning queen of dog photos because, as a dog lover herself, her feed is always filled with the most adorable shots of couples with their pets at their engagements, elopements and weddings. Sound like someone you’d like to know better? Pull up a seat and get to know Jenna!

How did you get into wedding photography?

In high school and college I took a couple of photography courses, developed my own film, etc and loved it but never had the means to buy myself a “fancy” DSLR camera. Shortly after we got married, my husband, Mark, bought me a Canon Rebel as a gift. I started taking photos of anything and everything – Vermont landscapes, our cat’s shenanigans, you name it. After a couple of years, my sister-in-law (who is Vermont family photographer) connected me with a local photographer who needed a second photographer/assistant for the summer. I said yes, ended up working almost 20 weddings with her that first year and fell in love with wedding photography. I started my own business that October, and this will be my 5th year owning my own business!

How would you describe your photography style?

My approach to wedding photography blurs the line between photo-journalistic and fine art styles to provide couples with timeless imagery representing real, organic moments in an artistic way. While I am drawn more towards capturing the organic, naturally candid moments of the day, I believe there is also a time and place to trust your wedding photographer to gently direct you through a few beautiful portraits in glowy, golden hour light. In my opinion, the best wedding galleries represent an intentional mix of the two.

What inspires your work?

Honestly? It is such an honor to document one of the happiest days in a couple’s life, that the job in itself is inspiration enough. I know this sounds corny, but couples put an insane amount of trust in their photographer and it’s such a gift to be able to preserve these memories for them for generations.

Any special tips for couples for working with a wedding photographer?

Oh gosh, yes! I actually wrote an entire blog post on this!. My #1 tip? I always tell couples that while it’s important to love my work, it’s equally important that they feel comfortable chatting with me on our first phone or Zoom call. Feeling the slightest bit comfortable speaking with your photographer will help you feel that much more comfortable being photographed. So, find someone you get along with – it helps, I promise.

What’s your favorite moment during a wedding?

I love documenting those first few moments of the recessional, just after the couple makes things official. These are often some of my favorite photos of the day because the couple’s joy is so authentic and tangible. And, for at least a few moments, they are 100% present and not worried about the what/when/where/how of the remainder of their wedding timeline.

What’s your favorite thing to do in VT?

Aside from adventuring outdoors with Mark and our two rescue pups, Winnie and Milo, I love spending my free time boating on Lake Champlain with Mark and our friends, drinking a local beer at a brewery or our favorite local hangout, checking out the Farmer’s Market, or planning our next vacation. We caught the travel bug pre-pandemic and can’t wait to get back out there and see more of the world.

If you weren’t a wedding photographer what would you do?

I have always thought that being a counselor of some sort would be really rewarding! If I can’t help document people’s stories, I would love to be able to listen to them and help as much as I can.

What’s a fun fact about yourself?

I used to work for Senator Leahy in various capacities: in his Montpelier office in college, on his campaign after college, and in his DC office a year or two later. During his campaign, I was asked to drive him in the motorcade for Michelle Obama when she visited Vermont (and got to meet her). More recently, I was asked to photograph Senator Leahy’s retirement speech which was a really special thing to capture having worked for him over a decade ago.

What’s a song that always gets you on the dance floor?

Ooh I’m a sucker for “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire. Full disclosure: I’m a little bit of an old soul in the music department, but don’t get me wrong – I love the heck out of some Beyonce too!

HOW TO HAVE THE BEST WEDDING MORNING

I had the best wedding morning. I woke up with my husband and spent the morning at my house hanging with my bridesmaids while we got our hair and makeup done, sipping champagne and catching up. (My husband went out for lunch and jumped in a swimming hole with his groomsmen – it was a very hot summer day!) It was relaxed, simple, and so much fun.

I’ve also been part of wedding mornings that were chaotic and stressful. Ones that left me feeling rushed, hungry, or a just little frazzled heading to the ceremony.

That’s why I know how helpful it is to have a plan for your wedding morning. It’s is the onramp to your wedding celebration, and the goal is a smooth transition that gets you ready and excited.

Read on for our best tips for a smooth, fun wedding morning!

1. Make a clear plan and timeline for your wedding morning

There are a lot of moving parts to your wedding morning, and a lot of emotion. Make a plan with your partner so you both feel good on your wedding morning. Consider the following:

What do you want to do the morning of your wedding? (Ex. wake up with your partner, do a yoga class with your wedding party)
What do you have to do? (Ex. hair and makeup, get dressed)
What do you realistically have time for? (Ex. if you have a 3pm ceremony and 8 person bridal party, that yoga class may not work, but you can wake up with your partner and enjoy a cup of coffee before splitting up to get ready)
Who do you want to be with you? (Your wedding morning can be emotional; choose to surround yourself with people who make you feel good. Maybe in addition to your bridesmaids, you really want your aunt there, for example. Many couples choose to get ready separately, but maybe you want to all get ready together!)

Once you know what you want from your wedding morning, you can draft a timeline to keep everyone on schedule. Your unique, final timeline will be created with your vendor team, but we have excellent templates to help you get started in our Ultimate Wedding Planning Guide. (Along with additional tips!)

2. Communicate your expectations about your wedding morning to everyone involved

I recommend sending an email to your wedding party a week in advance with all the details for your wedding weekend. If you need your bridesmaids to be at your hotel room to start hair and makeup by 7am, don’t spring that information on them at 10pm after your rehearsal dinner!

Consider:

Where do people need to meet? (Ex. your hotel room, your house, the venue, a salon)
When do you need them there? (This is where you’ll rely on your wedding day timeline)
What should they bring? (Do they need to bring everything they need for the wedding, or will you be going back to the lodging in between getting ready and the ceremony?)
Transportation – are you providing transportation? Is everyone responsible for their own?
What do you want them to wear? (It’s important to wear a loose neck or button-down top to avoid messing up hair and makeup)

Clear expectations help everyone feel confident!

3. Set the mood with music on your wedding morning

A fun playlist can help shake off the nerves (and sleepiness) and get everyone in the mood to celebrate! Check out our Spotify Playlists for some inspiration. We curated one specifically for your wedding morning. (Don’t forget to pack and charge a portable speaker.)

4. Pass out gifts on your wedding morning

If you’re planning to give gifts to your bridesmaids and groomsmen, the wedding morning is a great time to do this since you’re all together in a more intimate setting.

If you’re planning to gift something to wear on your wedding day (ex. jewelry, a tie) it’s a good idea to tell your crew not to worry about that item ahead of time so they don’t buy something else in preparation.

5. Take the classic wedding morning picture in matching pj’s with your bridesmaids

One popular gift for bridal parties that’s always a hit is matching pajamas! This also makes for a great photo opportunity. Pop some champagne, pile on a bed and snap your own cute picture with your bridal party. It’s a classic for a reason and still one of my favorite pictures from my own wedding.

6. Don’t Forget to Eat – Ideas for A Wedding Morning Breakfast and Lunch

Nobody wants to be hangry on your wedding day, so don’t forget to feed your crew and eat! Some easy ideas for a wedding morning breakfast that will fill everyone up: a bagel bar, a breakfast casserole (easy to make ahead of time), and a big fruit salad.

Depending on the timing of your ceremony, you’ll want to also provide lunch or at least some heavy snacks as well. Think: a hearty, mayo-free pasta salad or sandwiches.

A mimosa bar and coffee are always fun too!

If you’re getting ready and eating off site from your lodging, we recommend bringing your toothbrush, some mouthwash and some floss so you can freshen up after eating.

7. Do a trial run with your wedding day attire and accessories

Do a test run of everything you’re wearing on your wedding day before your wedding morning. We mean everything from your dress or suit to shoes, accessories, and undergarments.

You don’t want to find out your underwear pinches funny or have to Google “how to tie a bow tie” on the morning of your wedding.

Also, be sure to remove all the extra strings and tags from your clothes, like those pesky hanger loops on bridesmaid dresses or the suit jacket vent threads.

8. Shift your mindset on your wedding morning from “planning” to “celebrating”

Take off your wedding planning hat, and slip on your party hat (metaphorically speaking, or depending on your style, for real). Take a few minutes to admire yourself in the mirror after you’ve slipped on your dress or suit; play a special song and sit quietly; stage a dramatic champagne bottle pop while yelling “IT’S MY WEDDING DAY!” … whatever you need to do to ground yourself in the moment. You’ve done the planning and now the day is here – enjoy and celebrate!

A JOYFUL OUTDOOR SUMMER WEDDING AT THE INN AT GRACE FARM

When asked what they love about each other, Sasha says she loves Tom’s giant heart, and Tom says he loves Sasha’s affectionate nature. That combined love is felt through today’s entire wedding gallery, captured by Jenna Brisson Photography. Lindsey Leichthammer Events planned the couple’s joyful celebration, hosted at the lovely The Inn at Grace Farm.

A Special Dog of Honor

The couple’s beloved senior dog, Truman, sat in perfect attendance in the first row to watch his humans tie the knot. Sasha and Tom made sure to get a few special photos with him as well! (And their signature drink was named in his honor.)

A Gorgeous Floral Seating Chart

One unique detail: the couple’s seating chart. They created an installation using a collection of bud vases with bright florals and small name tags. A small acrylic sign read: Find your seat here, but your place is on the dance floor. Guests listened, and danced under the twinkle lights all night long! THIS COUPLE ELOPED ON TOP OF MOUNT MANSFIELD WITH THEIR PUP

This couple shared an intimate mountain top elopement at the top of Mount Mansfield in Stowe, Vermont and the gallery from Jenna Brisson Photography is nothing short of spectacular.

Ally and Liam knew they wanted to exchange vows in a private setting, on a day that had sentimental meaning to them both. And of course, their pup, Pinto, had to be a part of their special day!

From the picturesque views to the pure excitement that the couple shared, it was a magical day.

Ally surprised Liam with a subway sign from the train stop in NYC, where the couple would meet to ride together in college. Thoughtful, unique details like this are what make each couple’s celebration personal.

This elopement had it all: an adorable dog, epic views, and above all, a lot of love!

THIS COUPLE HOSTED AN INTIMATE PICNIC WEDDING AND THEN HIKED MOUNT MANSFIELD

Like many couples, Lauren and Nick had to change their 2020 wedding plans – several times. The couple finally settled on an intimate picnic reception at Edson Hill in Stowe with loved ones. And honestly? We couldn’t be happier they had to change plans because their garden party style, wedding picnic is so gorgeous! The lush, colorful, boho florals by A Schoolhouse Garden and elegant decor pieces contrast nicely with the casual nature of a picnic. It all comes together to set the scene for a lovely, intimate wedding celebration.

The couple’s adorable dog, Luna, almost steals the show with her cute antics (another benefit to smaller, outdoor weddings: you can easily bring along your dog).

Spectacular Mt Mansfield Vow Reading

And, if the picnic wasn’t cool enough, the adventurous couple hiked up Mount Mansfield following the celebration for a private vow reading. The views are incredible!

Pretty in Pink Vermont Backyard Wedding

Jen and Jason’s Vermont backyard wedding may have been small – but it was big on color and love! The couple tied the knot with their immediate family at Jen’s childhood home. Two additional, very special guests were in attendance: the couple’s dogs: Lexi (yellow lab) and Emmy (chocolate lab).

When dreaming about their big day, Jen dreamed of lush florals. She worked with Emily of Tipsy Tulip Designs to bring her vision to life, which included a lush, pink-hued bouquet filled with garden roses and peonies. Emily also created the wooden arbor rented by the couple, and adorned it with cascading greens, and spring favorites such as peonies, garden roses, and anemones to perfectly frame Jen and her bouquet.

Though it was not the wedding the couple had originally planned (the couple had a large wedding in mind, but pivoted due to Covid), Jen says she wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Check out highlights from their backyard microwedding, captured by Jenna Brisson, below.

A CASUAL WEEKEND WEDDING WITH BEAUTIFUL DIY DETAILS AT STERLING RIDGE RESORT

Ashely and Nick loved the idea of sitting around a fire with their family and friends to celebrate their wedding; so that’s exactly what they did! Their intimate, laidback wedding at Sterling Ridge Resort featured their adorable fur babies (Sami and Jago), a campfire (with s’mores, of course), and plenty of time hanging out with loved ones (including Ashely’s first ever keg stand!).

Eco-Friendly Wedding Details

In addition to wanting the weekend to be fun, the couple also wanted it to be eco-friendly. They used compostable plates and cutlery, rented mason jars for drinks, and used recycled bottles for decor.

Their love of nature inspired their first look photos, which they did on top of Stowe Mountain – they even hiked to get the perfect shot in their wedding clothes. (So worth it – check out those gorgeous views!)

DIY Wedding Ceremony Display

Ashely used her DIY prowess to make much of their decor. She even crafted the altar flower arrangement herself out of wooden flowers (which was featured in the Best of 2020 Microweddings and Elopements story).

Candle Lighting Ceremony

When asked what special moment stood out, Ashely had an immediate answer. “Nick and I both lost a parent (my mom and his dad). “During the ceremony it was very windy, and you could hear thunder every few minutes! But, when Nick and I went to light candles in memory of our parents, the wind and thunder stopped. It was calm. To this day, I get goosebumps thinking about that moment.”

When a couple describes their relationship as “un-f***kingly believable” you know they are going to be fun to work with! That proved true when photographer Jenna Brisson met up with Annie and Ty for their downtown Winooski engagement photoshoot. “They’re hilarious and I had the BEST time with them wandering the streets of Winooski for their engagement session,” she says.

The couple are getting married at Waterworks in 2022 and wanted an engagement gallery to match their urban, red brick wedding vibe.
